By way of background, the Business Council was established in 1993 with the underlying objective being to heighten awareness
of the business environment and market opportunities in Papua New Guinea.

The members of the Business Council find that their business opportunities in Papua New Guinea can be, and are, enhanced
in a number of ways, including:

  • Reciprocal arrangements and association with the Papua New Guinea New Zealand Business Councils based in Port Moresby
  • Generous discounts on services in Papua New Guinea, such as accommodation, rental cars, etc
  • Regular newsletters and feedback from members following visits to Papua New Guinea, which assist in keeping the membership abreast of activities in Papua New Guinea, including political and trade matters
  • A developing network of trade and government contacts in Papua New Guinea
  • Provision of a single point of advocacy and a united body of opinion to Government on such matters as taxation, investment, customs, quarantine requirements etc
  • Representations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise on the focus of business development
  • Co-ordinating direct access to visiting influential political or business representatives
  • Providing the opportunity for networking and assistance between existing and new market participants on market issues and to enhance the competitiveness of New Zealand business
